Started working in communications with Dept P&T in 1975 and then 31 years of computers with IBM, I have seen the changes. Thank you for sharing all this great inform...Hello! Thank you for sharing all this great information! I think some how we might be distantly related! My great great great grandfather was named James Eccles who had a sister named Elizabeth! I’d love to connect with you to try to unravel some of this history. My family recently visited Carrickmacross to try to find the mill my great great grandfather left with his sisters when he moved to the USA. We brought my dad to Ireland for his 60th birthday to find some piece of his ancestors. Our information is wanky and from the 1930s so we didn’t actually find the mill but it was lovely to visit the town and the country in general! Not sure of an Ed Eccles from New Jersey but my grandparents were from New Jersey so I’m sure there’s some relation there!! Please let me know if you have anymore info you want to share! Thank you! We visited many times when the house was at its most splendid.I have vivid memories, it was not a dark gloomy house, it was a bright, imposing mansion. Outside it had an artificial lake, a working forge and extensive glasshouseswhere one could pick oranges. I cannot believe the ruin it has become. My aunt always told us it was haunted. This didn’t bother her in the slightest as she moved about her daily life. My aunt loved living here and had an excellent relationship with last Trench owner. She was treated very well. However, as an adult, I think there was a darker side, exploitation of workers, with poor pay and conditions. Pretty much the usual Irish story where landlords made as much as they could from the labour of poor people. That being said, the house itself was simply fabulous, as children, my brother and I wandered it’s entirety. I would like to see it restored and open to the public. However as he did not come from Carrickmacross but from Maudabawn, I would have no knowledge of him. Sorry. But it would probably be best for you to directly contact the St Patrick’s Church in the village of Maudabawn or his religious order. I sincerely hope that your quest is successful.
However out of interest what did Father Gillsenan achieve or do to deserve a good reputation in Pinas? I am curious!
Best wishes,
Brendan Speedie's Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10091093281263233234noreply@blogger.com
